Description
From a 1909 magazine advertisement, restored and retouched.
An auto-cycle was (at first) at motorized bicycle, but several of them can be legally defined as a motorcycle.
There were several different Excelsior brands around, but this one was located in Randolph Street, Chicago. For locals: At the time of this ad,,Frederick C. Robie was the assistant manager of the Excelsior Supply Company. The company on the South Side of Chicago was owned and managed by his father.
It was during this exact period (of this advertisement) that Robie had his house built, The Frederick C. Robie House, which is a U.S. National Historic Landmark on the campus of the University of Chicago in the neighborhood of Hyde Park in Chicago, Illinois, at 5757 S. Woodlawn Avenue on the South Side. (It was designed and built between 1908 and 1910 by architect Frank Lloyd Wright)
