he Red Star Line was an ocean passenger line founded in 1871 as a joint venture between the International Navigation Company of Philadelphia, which also ran the American Line, and the Société Anonyme de Navigation Belgo-Américaine of Antwerp, Belgium. The company's main ports of call were Antwerp in Belgium, Liverpool and Southampton in the United Kingdom and New York City and Philadelphia[citation needed] in the United States.
It brought countless of european immigrants to the United States and to Canada. Henri (Hendrick) Cassiers (Antwerp, 11 August 1858 - Ixelles, 1944) was a Flemish artist, best known for his applied art: illustrations, posters, wall charts and postcards, often with a maritime slant, and was considered the in house artist for the Red Star Line. Cassiers had a degree in architecture and received his artistic training at the academies of Brussels and Saint-Josse-ten-Node. He soon developed his own style and theme, focused on maritime scenes ("marines") and urban and village scenes, both in Flanders and the Netherlands. He was particularly attracted by the Dutch national costumes, especially those of Zealand and Katwijk.
