The Beggarstaffs, 1895, for Harper's Magazine Nottingham England for Harper's Magazine, portraying a Yeoman Warder
The Yeomen Warders of Her Majesty’s Royal Palace and Fortress the Tower of London, and Members of the Sovereign's Body Guard of the Yeoman Guard Extraordinary, popularly known as the Beefeaters, are ceremonial guardians of the Tower of London. In principle they are responsible for looking after any prisoners at the Tower and safeguarding the British crown jewels, but in practice they act as tour guides and are a tourist attraction in their own right, a point the Yeoman Warders acknowledge. The Yeomen Warders are often incorrectly referred to as Yeomen of the Guard, which is actually a distinct corps of Royal Bodyguards. Gilbert and Sullivan perpetuated this confusion by naming their opera The Yeomen of the Guard when it actually concerns Yeomen Warders.
Colors: red, white, black
The Beggarstaff Brothers, officially known as Beggarstaff, J. & W., was the appellation under which the British illustrators, William Nicholson and James Pryde, published their celebrated posters. The Beggarstaffs were brothers-in-law James Pryde and William Nicholson who opened an advertising design studio in 1894. The Beggarstaffs were known for their new technique, collage, using cut pieces of paper moved around on a board leaving a figure incomplete for the viewer to decipher.
